As you well know, I’m a New York Times junkie. Admittedly their coverage of upstate issues is a little weak, but I’ve always considered them a national news source and never held this against them.
I religiously read the Times‘ book review, front page stories, opinion pages, education section, and Judith Warner’s blog, “Domestic Disturbances.” Other sections are hit and miss depending on topic. So it was in this vein that I was pleased to see the formation of yet another new blog, “Slapshot.” I’m not much of a hockey fan myself, but I was excited to share my find with pretty much everyone else I know, because they are some of the most passionate fans in the league. (I live in Buffalo. It’s cold here. Hockey keeps you going through those long gray days.) But lo and behold, the Buffalo Sabres failed to even make the tagline of this New York-based blog that even includes the Devils! Are we so invisible? Do anyone remember our season last year? We nearly went home with the Cup!
I’m not one who unrealistically believes that winning a national championship will change the face of Buffalo forever, especially since outside of Western New York, this team rarely gets the credit it deserves. I’m sorry to say that my latest discovery only reinforces my belief that bringing home the Stanley Cup will not work miracles. So, if you are local, forgive my rant–I know I’m preaching to the choir, but if you happen to be someone who doesn’t live within a one hundred mile radius of the City of Buffalo, then please take note, we do exist!

I deffinantly agree. Even this year we lost some of our most valuable players, and are not as good, does not mean we don’t exsist. Just because we are not at the top of the league like previous years, does not mean we should be taken likely. Buffalo is one of the best hockey towns in the United States.

I think Buffalo isn’t just a great Hockey city but just a great place in general. It is a place that still has great promise. To make Buffalo great once again a few things need to happen. One is we need to get rid of the skyway. Two, more attractions need two happen like a better shopping mall or more a big movie theater. Last but not least Buffalo needs to win a national championship and I think the Sabres are the ones to do that in the near future.

jmj89, I’m still sticking to my guns on the limited effects of winning a national championship, but I agree that if that were to happen and more traffic were directed into the city, both downtown and the waterfront were revitalized, and the next Bills stadium is built IN the city instead of out in the fields somewhere then we’d be well on our way to realizing our potential. We do have tremendous promise!

I don’t have anything against hockey, in fact of all the franchised sports, I think it’s my favorite, it’s just that I don’t follow the Sabres (or any team for that matter) very closely so I was just being honest!

I am a BIG fan of the Sabres and I hope we win the cup this year. I do agree that it keeps you going through all those long and gray days. If wwe didn’t have football and hockey to look forward to we would be pretty bored in the winter.I think we can be close this year hopefully.

I am a huge fan of the Sabres. I was sad to see our two best players (Briere being my obsession last season) leave the team but it happens. I think it took us awhile to get used to the new lineup but lo and behold we are getting better. You never know.. we could bring home the Cup in 2008!

I agree. Although I may not be the biggest Sabres fan, I still support them 100%. I feel that team works very hard practicing in order to achieve the Cup, and they should get more credit for that. I am very excited for the new season I can’t wait!

I agree. Buffalo is so overlooked. Sometimes i watch sports shows on ESPN and they seem surprised that buffalo is even in the playoffs. I believe that the best NHL fans are here in buffalo. Personally i can’t wait until next season so we can show that we are still contenders and maybe stop being so overlooked. GO SABRES!
